## 💡 What exactly is a smart meter?

**Smart meters** are the **most advanced electricity meters in Germany**.

They look similar to digital meters (both have a digital display), but smart meters come with an **extra component**: the **smart meter gateway**.

---

## 🔌 What does the gateway do?

The **smart meter gateway** is a communication device – often built into the meter or mounted on top.

It automatically and securely **transmits your consumption data** to your electricity supplier – no manual readings needed.

The best part?

You can track your energy use with **hourly data** via an app or online platform, helping you better understand and adjust your **energy consumption habits**. 🔍📉

## 🔎 How can I tell if I have a smart meter?

Here are a few key indicators:

- Your meter readings are **automatically sent** to your electricity supplier
- You can spot a **BSI-certified smart meter gateway** (usually mounted on the meter)
- Your household has a **high electricity usage** (6,000 kWh/year or more)

➡️ If any of the above apply, you most likely have a smart meter.

---

## 📊 Who gets a smart meter?

According to German regulations, smart meters are mandatory for:

- Households with an **annual electricity consumption above 6,000 kWh**
- Households with a **solar system over 7 kW peak**

👉 If your usage is lower and you don’t have a larger PV system, it’s **unlikely** that you currently have a smart meter.
